Tips to Save on Energy in the Home

Conserving energy, becoming ‘Green’, or eco-friendly is a step we must take to protect the Earth and its natural resources. Learning to reduce energy consumption can reduce your carbon footprint and save money. Energy bills, gas, and the cost of living have been a crisis worldwide. We all want to do our part to help save the planet. We also want to save money. We can do several things around the house in our everyday lives to save energy and help save us money on our bills. Here are some simple tips to save on both.

  • Did you know washing dishes by hand can use up to 15 gallons per load? It also uses extra Energy by heating the water with the hot water tank. Using an Energy Star-certified dishwasher can help save gallons of water. Newer models of dishwashers can use up to 3 to 5 gallons per load.

  • Air drying your dishes. Air drying your dishes can save up to 15% to 50% of the dishwasher's energy. Air drying your dishes rather than using the Heat Dry option on your dishwasher can help save Energy. Properly loading the dishwasher will ensure that the dishes are cleaned correctly and not use the repeat wash option using more Energy.

  • Using fans over air conditioners. Typical air conditioners use, on average, 2,000 to 5,000 watts per hour to cool the home. Ceiling fans use 50 to 100 watts per hour to operate. However, ceiling fans do generate heat as well. Both can be used to cool your home.

  • Switching to LED light bulbs. Incandescent light bulbs usually have short life spans and can burn items placed too close to them while in use. They are also less efficient than LED light bulbs. LED light bulbs are 80% more efficient than incandescent light bulbs. Regular light bulbs can produce heat while being on, wasting energy. LED light bulbs use 95% of the energy it uses into light.

  • Closing the blinds or window coverings in the summertime can reduce the need to use your air conditioner.
