National Housing Day

A house is more than 4 walls and a roof. It is where we raise our families, spend time with loved ones, seek solace after a long day’s work, and find rest and recovery during times of illness. A home can be filled with love, laughter, and life. Unfortunately, not everyone in Canada has a home, and at many points in recent Canadian history homelessness has been declared a national emergency.

Beginning in 2000, November 22nd was first recognized as National Housing Strategy Day. In November 2017, Canada announced its first National Housing Strategy which states that the right to adequate housing is a fundamental human right.

“A home is a place of refuge and safety. It connects us to community and gives us the stability to grow. Today, on National Housing Day, we recommit to ensuring that everyone in Canada has access to safe, quality, and affordable housing to raise their families, build their future, and reach their full potential.” – Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada stated on November 22, 2023, in Ottawa, Ontario.
